Accommodation in Vava'u: where to stay

Most people come to Vava'u for the whales and the water. Where you stay shapes the rest of the trip. Here's how accommodation in Vava'u works, from hotels and guesthouses in Neiafu to a villa of your own out on the islands.

Option one

Hotels and guesthouses in Neiafu

Neiafu is the main town of Vava'u, set on a deep, sheltered harbour. It has hotels and guesthouses, and staying in town means cafés, restaurants, shops and the harbour are all within walking distance.

Many whale and boat tours leave from the harbour, so there's no boat needed to get to them. If you want to eat out every night and have everything close by, Neiafu is a great choice.

Option two

Our island, Ofu

Ofu is about 25 minutes by boat from Neiafu, with a small village and no resorts. The Niulahi Villa sits right on the beach with its own jetty, three bedrooms and room for up to 8.

Your day starts with the sound of the water. Step off the verandah onto the sand, swim before breakfast (made for you, on the verandah), then spend the afternoon between the jetty and the shade. Kayak from the jetty, snorkel the reef nearby, walk to the village, or do nothing at all.

Getting anywhere means a short boat ride across clear water, past limestone cliffs and small islands, and for most people it ends up being one of the highlights of the trip. For whale days and boat trips, our partner Port Wine Guesthouse in Neiafu runs the tours and we arrange boat transport from our jetty.

Dinner is up to you. Cook for yourselves in the fully stocked kitchen, order home-cooked dishes from our caretaker's menu, like fresh-caught local fish or ota ika (just let us know in advance), or take the boat taxi across to Neiafu for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants, for a small charge.

Hotel or villa

Hotels in Neiafu, or a villa on Ofu

A hotel or guesthouse in Neiafu puts you in town, with meals out and tours close by. A villa on Ofu puts you on the water in a house of your own, and the boat ride through the islands becomes part of the trip.

Niulahi is a beachfront villa about 25 minutes by boat from Neiafu, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and room for up to 8. If you're travelling as a group, one villa can be simpler than booking several rooms in town.

Choosing

Which suits you

Neiafu suits travellers who want restaurants, shops and tours within walking distance.

Ofu suits groups who want their own house on the water, slow days between boat trips, and a few nights where the loudest thing is the calm sea. Niulahi works especially well for groups of friends and families travelling together: three bedrooms for everyone's own space, plus air conditioning, two bathrooms with hot water, Starlink Wi-Fi, solar power and a fully stocked kitchen with a fridge to share.
