Getting to Vava'u and Ofu

Ofu isn't easy to get to. That's part of the appeal. Here's how flights to Vava'u work, from your first flight to the moment you step onto our jetty.

From the US

Flights to Vava'u from the US: fly via Fiji

Most of our US guests fly Fiji Airways from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Nadi, then take Fiji Airways' direct flight from Nadi to Vava'u (VAV). It's about 2 hours, runs a few times a week, and skips Tongatapu entirely.

Depending on the day, some itineraries connect the same day and others need a night in Nadi. Schedules change, so check the current timetable with Fiji Airways when you plan your trip.

From New Zealand and Australia

Flights to Vava'u from New Zealand and Australia: via Fiji or Tongatapu

There are two ways to do it.

Via Fiji. Fly from New Zealand or Australia to Nadi, then take Fiji Airways' direct flight from Nadi to Vava'u (VAV). It's about 2 hours, runs a few times a week, and skips Tongatapu and the domestic leg. Some itineraries connect the same day and others need a night in Nadi, so check the current timetable when you plan your trip.

Via Tongatapu. From Auckland, Air New Zealand flies direct to Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) on Tongatapu, Tonga's main island. From there, you take a domestic flight north to Vava'u. From Australia, you can connect through Auckland.

Via Tongatapu

Flights from Tongatapu to Vava'u (Neiafu)

If you fly into Tongatapu, Lulutai Airlines runs the domestic flights to Vava'u. The flight takes about an hour, with a couple of flights most days and none on Sundays.

You book Lulutai directly. Confirmation can take a few business days, and calling them is often quicker than the website. Check the baggage allowance when you book, as it's stricter than on international flights.

Whichever way you come, please share your flight details when you book, so we can arrange your transfer.

Step three

The last leg is by boat

We meet you at the airport and drive you through Vava'u to the harbour. Your airport and boat transfers on arrival and departure are included in your stay.

On the way, we can stop in Neiafu so you can pick up bottled water, mosquito repellent, snacks and any groceries for your stay.

Then it's about 25 minutes by boat through the archipelago, past limestone cliffs and small uninhabited islands, until Ofu comes into view.

  1. 01Fly to Vava'u (VAV), direct from Nadi or via Tongatapu
  2. 02Drive through Vava'u to the harbour

Once you're here

For trips back to Neiafu during your stay, the caretaker can take you across by boat taxi for a small charge.

For whale days and boat trips with our partner, Port Wine Guesthouse, we arrange boat transport from our jetty to meet your tour.
